Safety is a very important issue for Elements Manufacturing, Inc. (Elements). We are proud of our excellent safety record and work hard to maintain and improve it. We have always emphasized care and common sense in all aspects of our work. We do not take short cuts or allow our team members to operate in an unsafe manner. We have now adopted this Injury and Illness Prevention Program to document our commitment to safety and illness prevention. We will always stress safety and extreme care on all projects and in all aspects of our work as safety is valued by our team members and our clients.
INTRODUCTION
An Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIP Program) establishes workplace safety and health practices. We are committed to provide a safe and accident-free environment for our team members. The IIP Program also addresses the procedures to be taken when accidents occur.
RESPONSIBILITY
The IIP Program Administrator, Ken Ketch, has the authority and responsibility for implementing the provisions of this program for Elements. All team sponsors are responsible for implementing and maintaining the IIP Program on their projects and in their work areas and for answering team member′s questions about the IIP Program. A copy of this IIP Program will be given to each employee at the time of hire and is available on both our intranet and our website for review at any time.
COMPLIANCE
Sponsors are responsible for ensuring that all safety and health policies and procedures are clearly communicated and understood by all team members. Sponsors will enforce the rules fairly and uniformly. All team members are responsible for using safe work practices; for following all directives, policies and procedures; and for assisting and maintaining a safe work environment. The system for ensuring that all team members comply with these practices includes the following practices:
- Informing team members of the provisions of our IIP Program
- Evaluating the safety performances of all team members
- Recognizing and rewarding team members who perform safe and healthful work practices
- Providing training to team members whose safety performance is deficient
- Disciplining team members for failure to comply with safe and healthful work practices
COMMUNICATION
We recognize that open, two-way communication between management and staff on health and safety issues is essential to an injury-free, productive workplace. The system of communication, designed to facilitate a continuous flow of safety and health information between management and staff in a form that is readily understandable, consists of the following items: New worker orientation including a discussion of safety and health policies and procedures Review of our IIP Program Regularly scheduled safety meetings Effective communication of safety and health concerns between team members and supervisors Posted safety information Our company communicates with and instructs team members orally about general work practices with respect to hazards unique to each employee's job assignment
HAZARD ASSESSMENT
Periodic inspections to identify and evaluate workplace hazards will be performed by our program administrator and will consist of identification and evaluation of workplace hazards and any other effective methods to identify and evaluate workplace hazards.
The workplace includes shop, storage areas, and job sites. Separate from this plan is our Hazard Assessment Checklist that we use to evaluate potential hazards in the workplace:Periodic inspections will be performed according to the following schedule:
- When the IIP Program is initially established
- When occupational injuries or illnesses occur
- Whenever workplace conditions warrant an inspection
- Every six months at a minimum
ACCIDENT/EXPOSURE INVESTIGATIONS
Procedures for investigating workplace accidents and hazardous substance exposures include:
- Visiting the accident scene as soon as possible for factors associated with the accident/exposure
- Interviewing injured team members and witnesses
- Determining the cause of the accident/exposure
- Taking corrective action to prevent the accident/exposure from happening again
- Recording the finding and corrective actions taken
HAZARD CORRECTION
- Unsafe or unhealthy work conditions, practices, or procedures will be corrected in a timely manner based on the severity of the hazards. Hazards will be corrected when observed or discovered
- Corrective actions will be documented
TRAINING AND INSTRUCTION
All team members, including managers and supervisors, will have training and instruction on general and job-specific safety and health practices. Training and instruction will be provided as follows:
- When the IIP Program is first established
- To all new team members
- To all team members with respect to hazards specific to each employee's job assignment
- To team members given new job assignments for which training has not previously been provided
- Whenever new substances, processes, procedures, or equipment are introduced to the workplace and represent a new hazard
RECORDKEEPING
Records will be kept on the following subjects:
- Health and safety training for each team member, including the worker's name or other identifier, training dates, type(s) of training, and training providers are recorded on a worker training and instruction form. We also include the records relating to worker training provided by a construction industry occupational safety and health program approved by Cal/OSHA
- Hazard assessment inspections, including the person(s) or persons conducting the inspection, the unsafe conditions and work practices that have been identified and the action taken to correct the identified unsafe conditions and work practices, are recorded on a hazard assessment and correction form
- Unsafe conditions and work practicesCorrective action taken
Inspection records will be maintained for five years.
